THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL, but the Greta team is heating things up!!

As we prepare for our F/W 2012 collection; things have been getting truly exciting over here. Between fabric deliveries, garment fittings and sewing our designs, we have been keeping busy in the new year! The new year allows us to embark on new discoveries -- through both new fashion trends and recycled ones. We tend to forget that the finished products we see on television, in stores, and in magazines developed as a result of considerable efforts. Fashion especially demands time, lots and lots of time, in addition to determination and an eye for detail. As I can attest to, many fail to take the time to think and reflect, instead of jumping the gun and going straight to the sewing machine. Fittingly, I took some time to look over the shoulders of our Kirk and Stephen, here at Greta Constantine.

STEP ONE: THE SENSATIONAL IDEA!

Creations start with an idea. Something that sparks your interest and gets your creative juices flowing. This morning while we were stocking away our materials we happened to come across a dirt mark on one of the fabrics. Most would look at it for what it is -- dirt. However, we at Greta Constantine came up with ideas that could require it. Creativity is very much a collaborative process! Beauty through design is about joining our knowledge and experiences with one another, so that we are able to not only see the BIG PICTURE; but CREATE IT.I thought it would be perfect for our readers to have a chance to see what goes on behind the making.

Hello, children. The folks at THE COVETEUR were most lovely to feature our VERY OWN Kirk Pickersgill, (one-half of the duo) behind Greta Constantine on their mega popular site today. Kirk definitely has some stylish tricks up his sleeves. Case in point:

These sandals are seriously tough. And incredible. If these do not put you in a Zen state, I do not know what will!

I LOVE THIS SHIRT. THE FLOWER. Swoon!

As anyone who knows Kirk can attest to, this style of shoe is a definite Kirk signature. The days in the summer when Kirk did not shoe up in his classic choice of sneaks were rare as a bear downtown Toronto.

Fashion shows are hectic. Like crazy hectic. Ours would not have been possible if it were for the best crew in the whole wide world (sound people, lighting people, DJ, makeup artists, hair stylists, volunteers, and, many, many, MORE.) Thank you, friends!

Giddy up! There is no time like show time!

Quick! Quick! Time is running out, till the first model out!

Fancy chandeliers hung like little angels from the ceiling at the beautiful historic King Street West location of the show.

The ever stylish Jen. Her tights looked like tattooed appliques, but upon further inspection, were tights. So pretty! Also. Is blogger the next Tommy Ton? That one is still up for debate.

Getting corded.

This shelf can teach us three valuable lessons about how to handle fashion shows: be in a zen state. Work fast, and STAY HYDRATED. Especially when show venue is as steamy as the first of July.

Did someone say TIFF? Oh right... We kind of forgot about the once annual film extravaganza located in the heart of our hometown. Why, you ask? For one thing, we are super busy working on our SS 2012 Collection (SO excited to show you guys!) as well as FW 2011 production. We have been so honoured to dress some seriously fabulous ladies in an array of unique Greta Constantine wears. Stacey, take it away!

falling into colours & layers

It’s that time of the year where fall is just around the corner. Transitioning your wardrobe can be a tricky one, so here are some ways that can help you be prepared for the pre-fall season! 

 
Layers:

It may still be warm during the day, but the nights are getting a lot more breezy. So, adding layers to your outfit is a great way to modify your look. Keep your summer pieces and incorpoate it to fall.

Put on your skirt, wear a cute button-down shirt, and throw on a chic sweater!

Here’s one of our dresses from the Primer collection. The POSEY dress is a great example for a summer to fall transition outfit. Make it your own, by adding your own cardigan or jacket, and style the scarf any way that suits you!

Colours:

 We love mixing prominent colours into our wardrobe. Savor the summer with bright/bold colours and balance it out with greys, blacks, or neutrals.

Word! We hope you had an amazing summer (following our blog, of, course!). We loved the short dresses and sweet evening soirees summer had to offer, but are SO ready to layer on cozy jersey and fur pieces, to gallivant in the Fall leaves! Given that... DO we have some new clothes for YOU. Each season, our wears must be photographed for a look book so buyers can choose and see which Greta, Ezra, and, Primer Constantine pieces they want in their respective shopping destination. We recently shot the Greta Constantine Primer and Ezra Constantine look books at photographer Gabor Jurina's slick Toronto studio.

Welcome to our lensman (Mr. Gabor Jurina's) extraordinaire's studio!

Some major photographic instruments. After all... models and mannequins BOTH need a little help looking picture perfect. That is why photographers exist, mais non?

Swishy/lovely silky blue fabric. One of the most important tools of the trade - if there is no fabric, there is no clothing!

We've got the goods.

Fashion people do eat... Here salads are aplenty. Greek, Caesar, and Garden, oh my! After a day of shooting, eats are imperative!

She's got grace. This would be the most perfect dress for lounging poolside on a weekend getaway. Comfort and style in 1? That is a winning combination, my friends.

Being a Toronto-based company, we at Greta Constantine have a [wee] bit of Canadian pride. Not going to lie about that fact. Undoubtedly, One of our most favourite things about Toronto is the fashion website THE COVETEUR, created by Toronto natives Stephanie Mark and Erin Kleinberg, no less. We can take an educated guess that you have visited the site on numerous occasions to peep the wardrobes of some of fashion's finest, to gain some prime outfit inspiration ;)

Do these handsome faces look familiar? Thought so. These dapper fellows are Kirk and Stephen, snapped by none other than Mr. Gabor Jurina, from the 1980's! Crazy... I know!

A Greta Constantine girl does not leave the house without always being well belted. This piece from our collaboration with Danier is forward-thinking option, and pairs splendidly with the other outer layer pieces offered in the line.

We might not be the first people reporting on our own event, but IT IS HERE NOW!!! What event is this blog post about, you ask? The Greta Constantine PRIMER launch, of course! Fashion folk and friend alike joined us on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the humble abode of Michael Cooper and Krystal Koo (a muse to Greta Constantine) in Toronto's swanky Annex area to party Greta's younger, hip sister PRIMER. Designers Stephen Wong (left) and Kirk Pickersgill (right) getting interviewed by a stunningly beautiful (it is bananas) Fashion Television host. Look for the boys, on a shiny silver screen near you!

Blogger has pants very similar to these, and the pants are so comfy! Great for a love-affair-with-your-bed kind of day if you are having a heck of a time getting to work in the morning, but not the best for production levels. Time for bed.

Jill was telling Jesse that said intern has his MBA (Master of Business Administration), and Kirk thought that Jill said "NBA" (as in National Basketball Association), and responded by saying that aforementioned intern does not play basketball.

House of Constantine friends, meet Gabor Jurina. He is a Toronto-based (GO!, Canada) photographic genious who specializes in fashion photography. And let me tell you... Gabor is INCREDIBLE at what he does. The images he captures are so stunning... it is bananas. Mr. Jurina is our very first choice whenever we need anything lensed. Stephen and Kirk have known Gabor as a photographer and a great friend for many years, and he has shot everything from Greta Constantine runway shows to editorials to advertising campaigns! Below, find the tasteful objects that he cannot do without in these toasty, relaxing, sunny, summer days.

1. Grey high tops, especially with shorts.

2. American Apparel Deep V tee shirt in white, navy, and light blue. They go from A.M. to P.M. ... Perfect with shorts or under a light blazer.

3. Leather flip-flops.

Corinne has an alluring sense of style, something that is most definitely noted in her top summer picks seen above. Jill's Summertime Essentials

This summer has been a toasty one. It feels like you are a loaf of bread baking in a 450 degree oven. Nonetheless, it has been hot. So much so that I have certainly curated a few items that I need to get me through this season with some style. Not included: countless jars of organic lemonade, iced cream cones, and, a large box fan to make this heat survivable.

1. a vibrant umbrella to make those torrential downpours bearable.

2. when you are a digitally based intern, an great computer is a must.

3. Naked Juice's Green Machine Smoothie (available at Starbucks locations is an awesome healthy snack and quick energy booster. Nothing could be better for a mid-afternoon pick me up!

4. A sundress is awesome because you can just throw it on and look instantly pulled together! The above number is sweet, and could not be better for that aforementioned college student budget.

5. Starbucks Chai Lattes - the best form of yawn repelling I have yet to come up with.

6.Keds are a must have pair of shoes for busy fashion interns: comfortable, colourful, and classic. Super for running errands... and if you are a design intern, great for being atop a cutting table!

7. Smart water (which is also a Greta Constantine corporate sponsor) to quench my thirst on these hot-as-an-oven summer days.

8. A cross-body purse to remain hands free. This one is so many different kinds of perfect.

9. French macarons for when I am craving a little sweet treat. These stylishly satisfy my sweet-tooth!

10. Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Foundation is a new staple summer cosmetic essential of mine because: it is breathable (and feels oh-so luxe!) face makeup that will actually not melt off your face before you have arrived at work.

An Open Letter to Kate Middleton

Dear most lovely Duchess of Cambridge,

I am confident this letter finds you well.

We have been eagerly watching your every fashion move since long before you stylishly wed married Prince William, and most recently, when you boarded that plane in Britain, hopped across the pond, and landed in our nation’s capital of Ottawa, Ontario.

Not unsurprisingly, we here at Greta Constantine have been content with your fashion choices. We loved your prim navy blazer, fitted gray number, and tailored to perfection short navy column dress. However, as a style icon whose blue jersey engagement dress sent shockwaves (via ringing cash registers) across the globe, we yearn to see you in more of the beloved (and what has become your signature) fabric.

Princess Catherine, please take some time to read this heartfelt letter. It is certainly inevitable that your fashion quotient would be instantly upped if you chose to wear something from a Greta Constantine collection, past or present. Simply imagining the drapery, the silhouette, the radiant colour, I have goosebumps. If you wore any Greta Constantine, we would most likely shed tears of utter and indescribable joy at how stunning our pieces look on you (if the dress sold out at Holt Renfrew or Harrods, we would not complain either).

Please allow me to elaborate. There is no question that our jersey numbers would look beautiful on you. Let's be honest, even a paper bag would look alluring with your frame and natural glow.

Oh, and our cobalt blue numbers would look to die for on you… The deep blue colour would complement your rich, chestnut locks and twinkling hazelnut eyes. The cherry red gowns would also look marvelous on you, your Majesty (and would be the cherry on top of our fashion filled cake).

Canada Day may have been Friday, but that doesn't mean odes to our nation ought to be confined to that single day! Indeed, having the good fortune of being a Canadian fashion label designed, managed, and produced in Toronto, Canada, we at Greta Constantine thought it would be a perfect time to highlight some of our most favourite things about residing in this beautiful land.

Some backstage access - at the Greta Constantine Fall/Winter 2011/2012 show at the Audi dealership in downtown Toronto's East end. Seen is (FORD) supermodel in the making Madison in one of our cozy-chic Fall looks. Look familiar? She starred in our SKIN campaign from just a few weeks ago.

THE COVETEUR. Co-founders Erin Kleinberg and Stephanie Mark are Canadian, and super-talented photographer for the site Jake Rosenberg hails from Toronto, as well. We all know and love the fanciful-fashion-filled web wonder that captures the professionally curated wardrobe and home findings of some seriously stylish folk. Pictured: a Greta Constantine feathered frock aptly named the 'Liz' in the home of FLARE Fashion Director and demi-god, Liz Cabral.

We certainly cannot forget this fabulous natural sweetener. Melt-in-your-mouth flapjacks wouldn't be complete without it: maple syrup! Born and raised in O, Canada.

Feel Like I'm Livin' A Teenage Dream

When people ask me what I do, my response of "intern" tends to elict references referencing "The Devil Wears Prada," or worse still, "The Hills." Trust me, Quentin is no Heidi, Jesse is no Emily, and Kirk nor Stephen are anything close to a Miranda --- I mean this all in a good way. A very good way!

Interning at a fashion company, especially one you believe in, is a clever way to break in to the industry. Indeed, this is the very path which many industry-insiders-in-the-making take. Spending time with a company allows you to network with people in different departments and learn about what they do to ensure that the company ticks. It takes time to find a career in this wee world we call fashion, but it is totally worth it to intern to find out what area of fashion you really want to specialize in.

Here are some tips for definite interning success:

Do… scout out the sale racks. This is a great way to invest in swoon worthy designer clothes on a college student budget!

Do… be kind. It gets you places.

Do... work while you intern if you can. You can shop more if you do this ;) Teehee :) In the wise words of Editor In Chief Amy Astley "you're young, just do it". (Source: teenvogue.com)

Do NOT… wear heels at work. Your feet will look pretty but will inevitably throb. Wearing heels is impractical when you are running around the city or on your knees on a cutting table all day (you would not even be able to work on a cutting table in heels). Wearing heels to work and changing into flats is a wee bit silly because you will have to carry your heels in your caryall every day. Save your pumps for the dance floor!

Do NOT… be afraid to get down and dirty!

Do NOT… be worried about your clothing being steamed if it does not have to be. Subway rides and transportation wreak havoc on your previous efforts.

The interning phase of your life is made bearable when you work with incredible people who are amazing at what they do, offer inspiration, and, who make you erupt with laughter several times a day.

Lace, Wires, and a Trip to the 13th Floor

Kirk and Stephen joined Torontonian heavy hitters in the sectors of fashion, film, art, and media, at the annual Power Ball (the fundraiser has been around since 1999), in the fancy Harbour Front Centre, which raises dollars for the Power Plant, a public art gallery and organization that seeks to bring contemporary art to audiences near and far. This is a great way to help keep the art industry alive!

This sign served to mark the path for the evening's guests. No elevators necessary.

Either having experienced it first hand or simply by photographs, the laser-wire-lights acted to deceive the eyes in amazing ways. As did the vodka.

Kirk (right) and Stephen (left) in their signature attires (so what if the information in the brackets were deceptive -- It's all part of the theme!).
